The Licking River Watershed Watch is a non-profit organization that provides training and materials for volunteers to sample in the Licking River Watershed. The Licking River Watershed consist of the Licking River and all of it tributaries. As a volunteer you will be trained to conduct habitat and biological assessments, and to test pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and conductivity. You will also be trained to take water samples for bacteria and nutrient samples, which will be taken to a laboratory for analysis.
The data that is collected by volunteers are used to provide baseline information needed to justify sewer line projects and other water quality improvements. Presently there are over 70 active volunteer samplers. However, more volunteers are needed. Areas that are of particular interest are Morgan County (which presently has no active
volunteers) and the Triplett Creek Watershed in Rowan County. However, the monitoring of all areas in the Licking River Watershed are very important so all volunteers are welcomed. Becoming a volunteer is easy and only takes about 10 hours a year.
Morehead State University's Environmental Education Center will host a training on Saturday, April 5th, from 9 am to 4 pm. The training will be held on MSUs campus in Lappin Hall room 243 (Ecology Lab). Lunch will be provided for the volunteers. The training is for new volunteers and existing volunteers that need to be retrained. Please come prepared to be outside for part of the training. For more information and to sign up contact April Haight at (606) 783-2455 or a.haight@moreheadstate.edu
