On this page you will find links to web resources,  and a laboratory resources and environmental activity resources. Many of these resources are available to MSU students and area teachers, who have:

1) participated in the Environmental Education Centers workshops

2) enrolled in the Environmental Education Endorsement, or

3) taken courses at Morehead State University.

For more information or to inquiry about borrowing any of the materials contact April Haight at 606-783-2455 or by email at a.haight@moreheadstate.edu.

Ecology Lab and Environmental Education Center Recourses

Equipment

The Ecology lab maintains modern equipment for teaching and research in environmental education, assessment and monitoring. We have equipment for field sampling of invertebrates (two Surber samplers, a Hess Sampler, and artificial substrates), plankton (three Schindler-Patalis plankton traps, Wisconsin Nets), fish (drift nets, meiofauna nets, and two backpack shockers), water sampling (six Van Dorn samplers, a motorboat, Secchi discs, two underwater PAR meters, two sounding lines with leads), and water flow and velocity (four flow wands, and a USGS Gurley Pigmy meter).

For unattended measurements of ecosystem metabolism and water quality we maintain eight Teledyne autosamplers with area-velocity flow meters and rain gauges. We also have over a dozen multiparameter datasondes for in situ monitoring of DO, pH, conductivity, and temperature in surface waters. For in lab analysis of samples we have five portable spectrophotometers, we have two fluormeters for measuring chlorophyll a. Analysis of elemental composition of soil, water, and plant tissue is also facilitated by having four analytical balances, a Perkin-Elmer CHN analyzer, 14,000oC capable muffle furnace, two Floss Analytical automatic block digestion systems (one in an explosion-proof perchloric acid fume hood), Radiometer analytical titrator, and Seal AQ2 discrete analyzer.

For paleoecological studies, we have a Livingston Piston Sampler for taking sediment cores, and a Nikon microscope with 63X objective. The microscope is also fitted with Hoffman Modulation Contrast to aid in identification of bacteria, pollen, phytoplankton, and zooplankton.

Inventory List

The to the EEC Inventory is a list of materials (books, instruments, kits, articles, posters, DVD, ect) that the Environmental Education Center has, as of July 2008.  The list will be updated as needed. The list is not “printer friendly”, so we encourage you to browse through the list using your computer screen.  The list does not necessary include every single item, some of the items are clumped together to save on the typing.  If you need more detail information or have questions about one of the items contact April Haight at 606-783-2455 or a.haight@moreheadstate.edu.
